Entrepreneurs' Relief
After considerable lobbying from small businesses, the Capital Gains Tax Reform, which came into force on 6 April 2008, includes a new relief for capital gains tax. Known as 'Entrepreneurs' Relief', it allows the first £1 million of gains arising to an individual on certain disposals in 2008/2009 or later years to be charged to CGT at an effective rate of 10%. The Data Protection Act scam 
Businesses are being targeted by fake data protection 'agencies' posing as official government bodies. Their letters, which request sums of up to £135 to notify under the Data Protection Act, often use threatening language and are on official-looking headed notepaper.

Impact of the credit crunch is beginning to be felt

The FPB is highlighting research showing that, while some industries have experienced a fall in the number of firms going into administration, despite the credit crunch, there has been a significant rise across most sectors.

New benefits for temporary workers could harm small businesses and cost jobs

The FPB is warning that proposals to hand temporary workers the same benefits as full-time members of staff could make many small firms uncompetitive and lead to greater unemployment.

FPB backs move by MSP to scrap fuel duty rise

We believe that the Government should abandon plans for a further increase in fuel duty, following a motion tabled by the Scottish Nationalist Party's Brian Adam, in which he also called for a fuel duty regulator.
